LEFT is how I like to travel, coming to St Croix and traveling around the island. LEFT, you say, what do I mean by this …
I get so excited when it’s time to plan a return trip to St Croix. The first to do is, of course, pick the date. (Check the availability of Casa de Vista) After that date is chosen, then it’s time to think about the plane and the vehicle. This is when a little reminder pops into my mind. Just an FYI to all of “My Field Trippers,” remember this: LEFT Side of the Plane & LEFT Side of the Road.
FLYING IN …
When it is time to book your seat, think about this. I like to book my seat on the LEFT side of the plane. Yes, the LEFT side – a window seat. Enough of the words right now.
A picture is worth a thousand words – Fred R. Barnard. Let me just show you what I mean:
And don’t get me wrong, there is really no bad window seat when you are approaching the island of St Croix. The beautiful Caribbean Sea, Fredericksted Pier, West End Beaches, and the lush green Rainforest area are all present out of that window seat on the LEFT side of the plane. (And the right-side view is that of the South Side of the island of St Croix and the famous Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge.) So, it’s a great view also. But look quickly; the plane banks slightly on the approach to landing, and you may miss that view out the right side. But No Worries.
If you aren’t in that window seat, maybe you can ask the person who is to let you take a peak, or maybe they will snap a picture on your phone. And, if you are denied either of these, don’t worry; you will be on the ground very soon, and your St Croix adventure will begin. (I’m sure you will get to do one of these.) So, No Worries … the locals & tourists are very welcoming and helpful.
DRIVING AROUND …
When you get behind the wheel of the car … Remember: Stay on the LEFT. Yes, stay on the LEFT side of the road. And yes, I know, the Virgin Islands is a territory of the United States. So why don’t they drive on the right-hand side of the road like we do stateside? (Stay tuned for another Field Trip to find out why.)
It really isn’t hard to do. Just pay attention to what you are doing and take your time. Once you get on the road and in the traffic flow, maneuvering the island will be easy, and you will get used to it. It’s just like anywhere else, just on the LEFT side. No Rush … Remember You are on Island Time. And, when you return to Casa de Vista, you will be all set because you have already driven on the LEFT side of the road – it’s like riding a bike; you never forget!! So, let’s plan that next trip.
Remind Yourself: On the LEFT
PS – Don’t get me wrong, either side of the plane has a great view, and you will be seeing everything in person very soon anyway. You are landing and will be there all week or hopefully more. So No Worries … Be Happy!
PSS – And fun fact … how cool is this … “You can turn LEFT on Red – if there is no sign and it’s clear” (Can’t do that legally stateside.)
