St Croix Facts & History
- Citizens of the US do not need a passport to travel to or from the United States. If you have one, it is recommended that you travel with it.
- You will go through US Customs when you leave St Croix. Proof of citizenship is required upon departure. Visit the USVI Dept of Tourism for more information.
- Currency = the US dollar $
- English is the primary language spoken on the island along with Spanish and Patois.
- You will need a rental car to get around. Driving is on the left! However, you will be in a US-style car with the driver on the left side of the car.
- The average temperature year-round is 82ºF (28ºC). The sun is intense! Be sure to wear cool clothing, apply lots of sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.
- Please use only “Reef Safe” mineral sunscreen. It’s the Law in the U.S. Virgin Islands! You’ll find it in the local stores. Learn more about Reef Safe sunscreen.
- The US Virgin Islands is an Unincorporated Territory of the United States. (the others are Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands)
- St Croix has been ruled under 7 different flags: Spain, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, the Knights of Malta, Denmark, and as of March 30, 1917 – the United States.
- The island of St Croix is the only place in the United States where Christopher Columbus actually landed. On his second voyage in 1493, Columbus’ ships sailed into Salt River Bay – the area is known as Columbus Landing.
