Interior Design Bedroom Creation … The Turtle Room

Do You Have Your Inspiration Piece?

The Original Inspiration Piece – The Pier1 Turtle Pillow (2017)

Where does one start the planning of an Island Room? With an inspiration piece, of course. You are looking for that one piece that catches your attention, something that reaches out to you, or something that you can’t live without. Like, possibly a turtle. OK, one of these will get the ball rolling. Whether you buy it or not, the idea has begun. It may be just a picture that you see on the internet (for example, Pinterest), or you may have captured a photo that inspires you.

How did that first bedroom down the hall become The Turtle Room? Blake’s (Our son’s) Room was created with a bit of inspiration from Pier1, and then exploring various stores and online sources. Everyone loves a theme. You will locate yours!

The turtle theme and color palette for this room all started with a single pillow. Its mix of deep and light blues, warm tan, and a pop of burgundy caught my eye, and from there the vision began to take shape. I played with different textures and wood tones, layering in pieces that felt natural and inviting. Before long, I was finding turtles everywhere—art, accents, and little details that tied it all together. Hard to believe the entire look and feel of the room began with a simple pillow.

Sadly, the pillow that first inspired this entire decorating journey is no longer with us. Some pieces don’t stand the test of time, and this one eventually had to be retired. Life at a rental home can be hard on things; the elements are harsh here on the island. But the spirit it sparked lives on—turtles are still going strong here, and I have a feeling they always will. After all, this will forever be The Turtle Room.

Vacation Home Wisdom, Straight from the Heart (of a turtle):

  1. So, find that inspiration piece to get the ball rolling. A theme or even color(s) will start the process.
  2. Keep the room fairly simple and not too cluttered.
  3. Change things out when “they have seen their better days.”
  4. And … most of all, have fun with the theme & the process.

Disclaimer: I’m not a professional designer, but I trust my eye. After experiencing many different vacation rental stays, we’ve created Casa de Vista with all the touches we know make a getaway truly memorable. Come for a visit. We would love for you to check it out!!
